NATIONAL NUTRITION WEEK

As part of the National Nutrition Week celebration 2016, Shri H. M. Shangpliang, Director of Social Welfare today inaugurated the State Level Workshop on the theme “Life Cycle Approach for Better Nutrition” at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Shillong. The programme was organized by the Community Food & Nutrition Extension Unit (CFNEU), Ministry of Women and Child Development, Shillong in collaboration with Department of Social Welfare, Government of Meghalaya. The programme was also attended by Dr. A. S. Guha, Regional Director, IGNOU, Shillong, Shri S. Bihari Singh, Demonstration Officer, CFNEU, Shillong, Shri L. M. Momin, Assistant Director, Social Welfare, officers from Social Welfare and Health department, Lady supervisors, Anganwadi Workers, teachers and students from various colleges. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Shangpliang said that the main objective of the celebration is to make people aware about the importance of nutrition for health which has an impact on development, productivity and economic growth. To reduce malnutrition, Shri Shangpliang said the Social Welfare department through 5896 Anganwadi Centres, which is a community based outreach programmes provides supplementary nutrition to children and pregnant and nursing mothers and adolescent girls of low income group to improve health and nutritional status. He also urged the field workers to be pro active and take extra care for the malnourished child who tends to have lower IQ and impaired cognitive ability thus affecting their performance in school and productivity in their later life. The day long programme includes presentation on the topics “Live Cycle Approach for Better Nutrition”, “Role of Education, Prevention, Control and the Management of Life Style Diseases for Better Nutrition” and “Importance and the Significance of Nutritional Intervention Approaches and Techniques During Early Childhood and Late Childhood”

CM REVIEWS SAFETY ASPECT OF 4 LANE ROAD

In a meeting here today at Secretariat the Chief Minister, Dr Mukul M Sangma reviewed the overall safety aspect of the 4 lane road namely the Jorabad-Umiam road. The Chief Minister said that the government has been reviewing this matter on a regular basis and directions have been given to line departments as a culmination of the review meeting. He informed that meeting examined the safety of the pedestrians which includes the school children and senior citizens and the important junctures like the crossings and the embarkment and the disembarkment points. He also said that the exercise will be further referred to Regional Transport Authority along with the Traffic Police to have a complete safety auditing of the whole stretch of the 4 Lane Road. Further, he also informed that the crucial concern of the safety of the slopes and the need to have effective measures for slope stabilization was also discussed during the meeting. He stated that certain pockets are vulnerable to landslides which cause threat to the safety of the commuters and this has also been reviewed and certain corrective measures will be taken. The Chief Minister also stated that the Umsning By Pass is in progress but the existing road which is in alignment to the Bypass is in a dilapidated condition and directions have been given to immediately overhaul it so that the travelling quality is improved.
