Press Release No. 256/16 WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY OBSERVED SAN-KER observed the World Suicide Prevention day today in Jowai at Chutwakhu Indoor Hall with the theme, “Connect, Communicate, Care” The Suicide prevention day was organized to raise awareness that suicide can be prevented. Earlier, R.Muthu, IPS, West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police flagged off the cycle rally from 4th Mile, taking part himself in the cycle rally along with a large number of participants to support the cause from 4th Mile to Jrisalen Playground, Chutwakhu, Jowai. Later, at Noon an awareness programme was organised in the Chutwakhu Indoor Hall in which the audience were welcomed by Dr. S.Syiem. .He also gave a presentation on counseling for survivors, highlighting on the steps required to help those families who had encounter such cases. Editor of the Shillong Times, Patricia Mukhim, herself being a survivor understands the pain of such families undergoing it, she therefore requested the gathering to show their love and care to those families instead of asking many questions. She underlined the importance of listening, being patient, caring and loving. She further advised the parents to spare some time for their children, to listen to their problems especially in this digitalised world where everyone is busy with their own work. Speaking from the teachers perspective, Mrs, Khianmom Kyndiah, Principal, Government Girls Higher Secondary, School, Jowai gave the reasons for the cause of suicide like Mental disorder, influence of drugs and Alcohol, constant quarrel of parents effect the child, emotional neglect, pressure at School made a child frustrated and latter on tend to take one’s own life. Therefore as parents and teachers we need to be friend with the children and support them, she also said as parent we need be alert that our children don’t get influence by the Social Media. Jowai Dy.SP, P.Syiem speaking at the function, called upon every individual to join hands to eradicate and to prevent suicide cases to happen. He further informed that in West Jaintia Hills this year 2016, 53 suicide case has been registered out of them 11 are females and 42 are Male. SAN-KER Psychologists, Aitihun M Wankhar and Naphisabeth Khasati through their slide presentation gave awareness on how to prevent Suicide and how to deal with Suicidal attempts. The Vote of Thanks was offered by Mrs Newmerilis Shullai, SAN-KER Day Care Centre, Jowai and Ida Rymbai, DIO, NIC, Jowai chaired the programme. |
