Press Release No. 681/06 ANGLING COMPETITION AT MAWTNENG POND A large number of people came out to actively participate in an angling competition held at Mawtneng community pond on September 9, 2006. Organized by the Confederation of Ri Bhoi People in collaboration with the Officers Club, Ri Bhoi District, besides providing recreational opportunities for the participants, the event was also designed to create awareness on the importance of preserving fishes and doing away with the practice of poisoning rivers for a big catch. The Meghalaya Home Minister, Mr. R. G. Lyngdoh supported the event by gracing the prize distribution function in the afternoon. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Lyngdoh lauded the organizers for giving a purpose to a favourite sport and leisure activity of the Khasis. Urging people to commit themselves to preserve the gifts of nature for the welfare of the future generation, he also praised the Mawtneng Dorbar Shnong for their foresight in rearing and maintaining the pond and utilizing the funds generated through it to support the salary of four teachers in the village upper primary school. Referring to the Memorandum submitted to him during the meeting for fencing and maintaining the pond, the Home Minister said that necessary steps will be taken in due course of time and in a phased manner. It may be mentioned that the first prize of the angling competition was bagged by Mr. K. Marpna, the 2nd prize went to Mr. G. Nongneng while the 3rd Prize witnessed a tie between Mr. T. Shadap and I. Shadap. |
Press Release No. 682/06 RECRUITMENT AT ITBP The Director General, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India invites application from eligible male Indian citizens for the post of Head Constable (Motor Mechanic), Constable (Driver) and Constable (Radio Technician) Interested candidates aged between 19 to 25 years (upper age relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST) and who have successfully completed their matriculation or 10th Class may apply for the said posts. For the post of Head Constable (Motor Mechanic) candidates should also hold a Certificate in Motor Mechanic from a recognized institution/ITI with practical experience or 3 years diploma in automobile engineering. For the post of Constable (Driver) candidates should also possess a valid driving License of light/medium/heavy vehicles with minimum 2 years experience in driving and three years diploma in Radio or Electronics or Telecommunication or Electronics and Communication Engineering from a recognized Institution for the post of Constable (Radio Technician). Press Release No. 683/06 TURA WINDS UP EDUCATION FESTIVAL ON WORLD LITERACY DAY The West Garo Hills District Unit of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) organized a day long programme at the District Auditorium on September 8, 2006 to commemorate the World Literacy Day as well as to mark the closing of the month long Education Festival in the district. It may be mentioned that a district wide enrolment drive for out of school children between 6 to 14cyears was conducted in the form of Education Festival under SSA as part of the District Unit’s mission for universalisation of education. Thousands of out of school children were enrolled, text books distributed to the needy children and training for teachers were conducted during the festival, organized in every block and village in the District. Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, Pro-Vice Chancellor NEHU, Tura Campus, Prof. S.S. Khare while congratulating the District team of SSA for the massive enrolment drive, also stressed on the need to take some strong remedial measures to prevent dropouts and sustain literacy. Expressing his concern that ever after 50 years of Independence, India still has 59 million children between 6 to 14years who are out of school, the Pro-VC said “there are over 13 ministries and departments in the country working towards literacy, but there seems to be no coordination. These departments should coordinate and work as a team to achieve the desired results”, he added. He also said that while organizing programme like the educational festival, steps should be taken to ensure that the impact of such programmes is reviewed and monitored. Earlier, the Pro-Vice Chancellor also gave away the awards to the best performing blocks of the District in the block level festival. The first place was bagged by Rongram Block, while Gambegre and Zikzak got the second and third prize respectively. West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Mr. P. Sampath Kumar highlighted the basic objectives of celebrating the World Literacy Day and the purpose of organizing the Education Festival. He also added that through the festival, the dropout rates in the district could be reduced to a great extent and there has also been a remarkable improvement in enrolment. District Mission Coordinator, SSA. Mr. P.K. Hajong gave a report on the Education Festival and SSA activities in the district, while the Principal DIET, West Garo Hills, Ms. K. R. Marak reported briefly on teacher’s trainings. Block wise reports were also given on the occasion by the respective Block Mission Coordinator. Additional DC. Press Release No. 686/06 TEACHERS DAY CELEBRATED AT JOWAI Along with the rest, Teachers’ Day was also celebrated at Jowai at the District Library on September 05th 2006 where Mr. K. Susngi, Co-Chairman, Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation was the Chief Guest and Mr. F. Kharkongor, Deputy Commissioner, Jaintia Hills was the Guest of Honour. In his speech Mr. Susngi said that teachers are nation builders and we owed them for whatever we are today. He called upon them to rededicate themselves in moulding the characters of the students and to give them their best. He added that the government will try to address the certain grievances faced by the teachers.
