SUMMARY REVISION OF ELECTORAL ROLLS

The Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya, Shillong has notified that the Election Commission of India has approved the scheduled dates for summary revision of Electoral Rolls with reference to 01.01.2008 as the qualifying date with partial corrections in the proposal made therein.

The schedule of dates for preparatory work, removal of discrepancies, if any, found during validation checks of the existing Photo Electoral Rolls database and integration and consolidation of all Photo Electoral Roll supplement is upto September 12, 2007: preparation of list of identification particulars of each section like village/hamlet name in case of part of village and main area or localities or societies or blocks in a colony in case of towns/metros, splitting of each part of electoral roll as per the list of sections mentioned above and their distribution to different localities/RWAs/Housing Societies and Gaon Sabha before the date fixed for draft publication of roll is upto September 28, 2007: draft publication of Photo Electoral Rolls is October 10, 2007: period for filing claims and objections is October 25, 2007: disposal of claims and objections is upto November 20, 2007: data entry upto December, 2007 and final publication of Photo Electoral Rolls is January 10, 2008.

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN ON ANIMAL CARE ORGANISED AT BABADAM

The Meghalaya AH & Veterinary Subordinate Technical Staff Association (MAHVTSA), Garo Hills Unit, organized an awareness campaign on Animal Health and Care at Babadam Upper Primary School on September 8, 2007. The purpose of this awareness programme was to uplift the socio-economic conditions of the rural community and to include their standard of living by making them aware of the ways and means of caring for their livestock.

Mr. Sengman R. Marak, Co-Chairman State Level Public Grievances Committee Meghalaya, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest said that veterinary is doing lots of good work to the rural community and thank them for organizing such a camp to express love and care for animals. He also appealed to the people to reduce the consumption of meat which hamper the development and ask people to follow the instruction of the doctors. Rearing of milch cattle will definitely raise the standard of living, he added.

The resource persons at the camp included Dr. Helico K Marak who delivered a speech on Disease treatment and its control. Dr. (Ms) Violine A Sangma highlighted the importance of cattle, poultry and pig rearing which also helps the people to improve their socio-economic status. She also talked about the artificial insemination (AI) which gives best breed of animals. Dr. Marcush Sangma spoke on fodder and feed. He said that there is a need to cultivate the fodder for the animals as the place has good scope for it.

Earlier, President MAHVSTA, Mr. P Sangma welcomed the gathering and Secretary, Mr. J C Marak gave a brief introductory address. The other person who spoke on the occasion is Dr. Marcush Sangma who said that veterinary is the backbone of agriculture and this can change the lifestyle of the people.

ENROLMENT DRIVE 2007 AT JIRANG

The Jirang BRC had on September 8, 2007 organised the enrolment drive at Paham Umshru, Ri Bhoi District, which is under Jirang CRC. A good number of parents, youths, students and headmen attended the programme. The Chief Guest on the occasion was the Syiem of Jirang Syiemship.

In his speech, the Syiem of Jirang said that education is most important for all. He called upon the parents of the area to send their children to school to ensure that their children’s future is secured.

All the speakers of the day which included Mr. H K Lapang, BDO Jirang C & RD Block and Mr. R Raisal urged the parents to avail the opportunity offered by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), especially for children below 14 years of age, and they should also bear in mind that the greatest wealth they could give to their children is education.

The day was highlighted by songs and dances presented by the students of different schools.

SPECIAL INTERACTIVE PROGRAMME AT TURA

A one-day Special Interactive Programme (SIP) on the theme “Towards Socio-Economic Upliftment of Rural Community” was organized by the office of the Assistant Director of Information & Public Relations, Tura, West Garo Hills on September 7, 2007 at Rom-Agal Upper Primary School. Inspite of the inclement weather, public leaders, school children and people from all walks of life participated in the programme. The aim of organizing the programme was to highlight government programmes and policies and to motivate people to participate in the government development schemes and also to interact with the citizens of the surrounding villages about their difficulties which they faced in the day to day live.

Mr. W P Marak, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Dadenggiri Civil Sub-Division, while inaugurating the programme, dwelt at length on the programme initiative taken by the Directorate of Information & Public Relations, Shillong and maintained that the people from the area should avail such benefits from this programme where concern department would highlight and inform their programme and policies. This programme also will enlighten the people where, how and whom to approach for availing the facilities offered by the government, he added.

Later, he lauded the Directorate of Information & Public Relations for giving the platform to other District Officers who have the common programme.

Mr. T G Momin, BDO, Dadenggiri while informing the public about Indira Gandhi Awaaz Yojana (IGAY) also explained about the scheme and programme. As for the programme, detailed presentation on cultivation of cashewnut and other cash crops was made by Mr. J R Sangma, SDO (Agri) Dadenggiri, while Dr. (Mrs) M K Marak, District TB Officer spoke on the need to take precautionary measures to be free from Tuberculosis and Dr. B A Sangma of AH & Vety informed the public about the availability of medicines in their dispensary outlet. Mr. C R Marak, District Sericulture Officer invite people to start rearing silkworm and informed that different schemes were available with their office, while Mr. G M Marak from Centre Silk Board demonstrated the products made out of silk.

Other highlights of the programme included essay competition for Upper Primary and Secondary Schools and prize distribution for the winners.

Earlier, Mr. A Suiam, the Assistant Director of Information & Public Relations, Tura delivered the welcome and key note address and informed the gathering about the purpose of organizing Special Interactive Programme, while Mr. J G Sangma, Journalist offered the vote of thanks. The programme was presided over by Mr. T N Sangma, Headmaster.

AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON SCRUB TYPHUS

An awareness programme on Scrub Typhus was conducted at Nonglait village under Pariong PHC, West Khasi Hills on September 5, 2007. The programme was organized by the DM & HO, West Khasi Hills in collaboration with State Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP), Directorate of Health Services (MI), Meghalaya, Shillong.

The programme was chaired by Mr. W Lyngdoh, Sordar of Nonglai village. Welcome address was delivered by Dr. M Lamare I/c Pariong Primary Health Centre, West Khasi Hills. The resource persons were Dr. A Dkhar, Medical Specialist of Civil Hospital, Shillong and Dr. J B Khongbuh, District Malaria Officer, East Khasi Hills and Public Health Specialist.

Others who interacted with the public were Dr. E Nongkynrih, DM & HO, West Khasi Hills, Dr. R R Lanong, State Surveillance Officer (IDSP), Dr. A Kabir, State Nodal Officer (IDSP).

Altogether 121 participants attended the programme. Mrs. J E Lyngdoh, ANM of Lawbyrtun Sub-Centre offered the vote of thanks.

It may be recalled that in the last couple of years a number of people from this area suffered and some died due to Scrub Typhus.
