SEMINAR ON SENSITISATION FOR LEGISLATORS ON NRHM

Shillong, September 16, 2011: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma today inaugurated the One Day State Level Seminar on Sensitisation for Meghalaya Legislators on National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) organized by the Indian Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (IAPPD) in collaboration with the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly at Pinewood Hotel, Shillong. The seminar was attended by Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Rowell Lyngdoh, Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Mr Charles Pyngrope, Member of Parliament and member IAPPD Standing Committee, Shri Shantaram Naik, Leader of the Opposition Meghalaya, Mr Conrad Sangma and the Secretary, IAPPD, Mr Manmohan Sharma.

The Indian Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (IAPPD) is a national level Organization established in the year 1978. The organization was formed with an imperative of moderating the pace of population growth for a smoother course of development so as to ensure an overall improvement in the quality of life of the people and maintain a proper balance between population and development.

Some of the primary aims and objectives of the IAPPD are to promote and facilitate the role of Parliamentarians, Legislators, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), and members of local bodies in resolving the problems of population and development by their active involvement, Work for increasing awareness among all sections of the population for an ideal small family through mass campaigns at different levels, Sponsor conferences of Parliamentarian to focus public attention with a view to enlist public cooperation and participation of people in the sphere of population and development programmes. The seminar is expected to benefit the legislators by enriching their knowledge about NRHM which is the flagship programme of the Central Government in the Health sector and also enable them to create awareness among the people.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Mukul Sangma said that it is appropriate that elected representatives are enlightened on NRHM so that they can carry the information to the people of their areas. He also felt that even the Members of the Autonomous District Councils should be included in the seminar for better results.

Dr Mukul said that the Health sector is being given top priority in the State and all efforts are being made to improve the health delivery system. He said that the areas of deficiencies in the Health sector particularly in the NRHM are being identified and efforts to address the issues appropriately are being made. “We are in the process of upscaling the facilities in the referral centres throughout the State. Referral chain of the centres should be strengthened and identify the weak part of the chain and take corrective measures”, he said. Dr Mukul Sangma also mentioned that while strengthening infrastructure, the manpower component should also be taken into account which is the reason why the setting up of two medical colleges is underway to address the limited absorption capacity for medical students in the NEIGRIHMS. He however informed that one of the biggest challenges in the Health sector is the fund availability which is an important issue that needs to be addressed. He informed that the State Government is coming up with the Universal Health Insurance Programme which is sustainable and will benefit the people.

While appreciating the IAPPD for organizing the sensitization programme, Dr Mukul said that it will equip the legislators with better knowledge and involve them in the fight against poverty and backwardness. Among others who spoke on the occasion were the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Rowell Lyngdoh, Member of Parliament and member IAPPD Standing Committee, Shri Shantaram Naik, Leader of the Opposition Meghalaya, Mr Conrad Sangma and the Secretary, IAPPD, Mr Manmohan Sharma.

RATE OF LOCAL TAXI REVISED

Shillong, 19th September, 2011: The Secretary, Regional Transport Authority, East Khasi Hills, Shillong has informed that the rate local taxi plying to the following destination has been work out as per rate approved and revised by the Government of Meghalaya.

From Iewduh to Smit village (18 Km) the rate is Rs. 190.00, from Smit to Thangsning (5 Km) the rate is Rs. 60.00, from Smit to Laitkyrhong village (10Km), the rate is Rs. 110.00, from Smit to Laitlum village (8 Km) is Rs. 90.00, from Smit to Jongksha village (14 Km) is Rs. 150.00, from Smit to Mawlali village (12Km) is Rs. 130.00, from Smit to Thynroit village (14 Km) is Rs. 150.00, from Smit to Laitdiengsai village (6 Km) is Rs. 70.00 and from Smit to Mawmuthoh village (5 Km) is Rs. 60.00.
