53RD NSS FOUNDATION DAY CELEBRATED

The NSS Unit, North Eastern Hill University today celebrated the 53rd NSS Foundation Day at a programme held at the Multi Use Convention Hall, NEHU, Shillong. Dr W R Kharlukhi, Rajya Sabha MP attended the inaugural programme as Chief Guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kharlukhi expressed happiness to be part of the programme since he was also an active volunteer of the NSS during his college days. He also congratulated the NSS for rendering its services through various social programmes which are highly effective and made a huge impact in people lives.

He also dwelled on the problems faced by the educated youth in the state where the unemployment scenario is on the rise. He urged the students to develop a positive attitude, to face their challenges and to look for avenues where they can create a platform to become job creators rather than job seekers. He also congratulated the various NSS units who had come from all over the state to be part of the programme and wished them great success in their future endeavours. During the day the University level NSS Awards were also given to Units in Colleges, Programme Officers and Volunteers in recognition of their services to the community for the year 2022 to 2023.

The awardees are, Best NSS Volunteers Ms Naphisaroi Kharbuli, NSS Unit, NEHU, Shillong, Ms Kerdarilin Khongwir, Lady Keane College, Shillong, Mr Armstrong Lyngdoh, Ri Bhoi College, Nongpoh, Mr Suklang Paul Kurbah, NSS Unit, NEHU, Shillong and Mr Pyndemlang Lyting, Shillong College, Shillong. Best NSS Programme Officers, Mrs Iasuklang Kharumnuid, St Mary’s College, Shillong and Mrs Yomica V Syiemlieh, Ri Bhoi College, Nongpoh and the Best NSS Unit went to Ri Bhoi College, Nongpoh.

CM ATTENDS THE 19TH FOUNDATION DAY CELEBRATION OF COLLEGE OF COMMUNITY SCIENCE

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma graced the 19th Foundation Day cum Annual College Week Celebrations of College of Community Science, Central Agricultural University, Sangsanggre, Tura held at Tura District Auditorium, on 24th September, 2022.

Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma congratulated the faculty and the students for the Foundation Day celebration and recalled the history of the college adding that it has close connection since Late P A Sangma former Lok Sabha Speaker was instrumental in bringing this college to Tura and the college can add lot of value not just to students but also to the community as a whole. He also expressed his gratefulness to the past faculty and students for their valuable contribution towards the progress of the college this far. Stating that it is not just education that institutions contribute to the society but research and innovation which is the core part of any institution where different stakeholders work together towards success. Further, he also advised that after research and innovation the products made in the college need to be commercialized and manufactured and scale up so that it reaches the public which brings entrepreneurs and business to the picture for collaboration.

The College of Community Science plays a vital role which is connected to grassroot level where local products and villages are connected and can lead to economic revolution, he said. Mentioning about the increase in the Self Help Groups, he said that there was only 4000 SHGs but now it has increased to 42, 000 SHGs in the region adding that the government is ensuring women are also involved in economic activities of the region. Further, in order to go beyond producing graduates from the institution and create maximum impact in peoples’ life especially in the grassroot level, the Chief Minister assured financial support and suggested for starting pilot projects with entrepreneurs and students in the initial stage.

The Guest of Honour of the function, Agatha Sangma Member of Parliament said that the College of Home Science as formerly called no longer caters to the sciences related to running a successful household but the technology and the faculties which includes not just women but men have developed are now revolutionizing in the field of food processing, apparel designing, agronomics to name a few. She further draws her admiration to the motto of the college which says, Do Not Be a Job Seeker but Strife to be a Job Provider adding that the subjects these young girls study are specially curated to make sure that they start their venture on their own.

Dr. Anupam Mishra, Vice Chancellor, CAU, Imphal highlighted the courses offered by the University in different colleges located in several states of Northeast India in agriculture and allied sciences including the achievements of the university and also thanked the Government of Meghalaya for its continuous support by providing technology support for Mission Jackfruit and expressed hope that the faculty bring in more success stories with maximum benefit to the people of the region.

While presenting a brief overview of College Achievements by Dr. Jyoti V Vastrad, Dean, CCS, CAU, Tura informed that the College of Community Science had considered Late P A Sangma, Former Speaker Lok Sabha as the Founder and Mentor of the College of Community Science. Further, she also presented a detailed report of the college and their achievements through these years and appraised the Chief Minister to facilitate the approach road and a bridge towards the college campus. During the function, Agatha Sangma distributed Prizes to the Best House, Best Performer of the Annual College Week and also distributed Certificates to students who had recently attended training course in textiles in Thailand. The Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills Swapnil Tembe, Professor Namita Singh, FSN Department CCS, CAU, Tura were among others who spoke on the occasion while other dignitaries, officials of different departments, teaching and non-teaching faculties, students of CCS, CAU, Tura attended the function.

CHIEF MINISTER CONRAD LAYS FOUNDATION FOR LONG AWAITED PROJECTS IN CHOKPOT

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new office building of Chokpot Sub Division in South Garo Hills fulfilling the long cherished dreams of the people. There was a festive mood in Chokpot as people from all walks of life converged to witness the historic moment as the Chief Minister also laid the foundation for a road from 12 mile along the Tura Dalu route to Chokpot, a total length of 35 km for strengthening, widening and blacktopping. Laying foundation for both the prestigious projects, the Chief Minister said, he was happy to fulfil the long pending demands of the people of Chokpot. It is a commitment that this government has for the people of the State.

The State Government has sanctioned close to Rs 50 cr for the construction of the new road, while Rs 4 cr for the new Sub Division Office building. We are working with the commitment to make Meghalaya one of the top 10 states in the next 10 years and through various initiatives and efforts, the State has made rapid strides in many of the developmental indexes, the Chief Minister said. He told the people that the Government has been working with commitment and confidence to ensure holistic and overall growth and progress in the State. He said that no region of the State is left behind in Meghalaya journey towards progress and prosperity. We cannot bring changes only by developing Shillong and Tura or town areas. Development should reach the remotest areas of the State. Even the people living in the remotest areas should have access to development that they deserve, he stressed.

Stating that 80 percent of the population reside in rural areas, the Chief Minister said, If the State has to progress we have to bring inclusive development on all fronts. All areas of the State should be put at the same level of importance and have its fair share in the development initiatives of the Government. Lamenting on the fact that Chokpot region has remained neglected for the last 50 years, he said, Our Government will not leave any remote areas from Meghalaya growth story. We will ensure that people’s concerns are addressed at all levels. Through different initiatives and welfare schemes, we are reaching out to nook and corners of the State.

On the construction of a new road from 12th mile to Chokpot, the Chief Minister told the gathering that it will be an intermediate lane and will be constructed without any compromise. It will be comparable to the best highways in the State, he added. On the construction of a new SDO office, he said, new building will facilitate better delivery of services to the people, while adding he said that the government has taken the initiative to develop infra in all blocks across the State. He also informed that the new building for Chokpot Block has also been sanctioned by the government.
