46TH TEACHER DAY CELEBRATED

Along with the rest of the country, the 46th Teacher’s Day was also celebrated at a function organized by the Education department, Government of Meghalaya in the Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong in which the Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr D D Lapang was the Chief Guest and the Minister for Higher and Technical Education, Mr R G Lyngdoh was the Guest of honour. The function was presided over by the Secretary, Education, Mrs L R Sangma.

9 teachers were conferred the State Award and 3 teachers were conferred the District Award which was handed over by the Dr Lapang. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Lapang said that the award presented to the teachers is a mark of recognition to the commendable service rendered by them. He said that the Government is concern of the financial hardships that the teachers have to face inspite of the noble service they rendered. He said that the State Government is finding out ways and means to improve and enhance the financial benefits and other facilities for the teachers.

While expressing concern on the literacy rate in the State, Dr Lapang said that the Government is making serious efforts to improve the literacy rate of the State and he also urge upon the teachers to contribute towards achieving the goal. Dr Lapang informed that the Education Policy of the State is in the anvil and he expresses hope that it will ensure providing of quality education to the students.

Referring to the unemployment problems among the educated youth in the State, Dr Lapang said that Vocational training is important as it provides the youth with opportunities to stand in their own feet. While congratulating the awardees, Dr Lapang urge upon the teachers to dedicated their work towards the cause of providing quality education to the students.

Higher & Technical Education Minister, Mr R G Lyngdoh in his speech said that the Government is mooting the idea of Operation sustainability in which schools will be provided with schemes for revenue generation which he felt would lighten the financial burden on the State exchequer.

Mr Lyngdoh also said that the Education system in the state should be able to provide employable skills to the students and should also encourage lateral thinking. He also urge upon the teachers to treat their job as a vocation and not only as a stepping stone to other job opportunities but should be dedicated to their work of providing quality education.

Momin, Headmaster, Williamnagar Town L P School, Mr D K Saha, Headmaster Rangku Memo Deficit Sec School, Baghmara, Mr N N Sangma, Head Teacher, Okkapara Govt. L P School and Mr A M Marak, Headmaster, Hawakhana Deficit Sec School.
