Press Release No. 678/06 DRIVE AGAINST ILLICIT LIQUOR The Deputy Commissioner(Excise), East Khasi Hills District, Shillong has informed that the Excise staff of the District actively continued the drive against illicit liquor and conducted raids in restaurants/ stalls in the city and its outskirt. During the month of August 2006, the Excise staff detected 59 cases with a seizure of 138.920 litres of i/d liquor and 21.260 litres of IMFL. In this connection 51 persons were arrested under Excise Act. The cases are under investigation/ persecution. |
Press Release No. 679/06 WORLD LITERACY DAY OBSERVED The District Unit of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan(SSA), East Garo Hills District, Williamnagar observed World Literacy Day today the 08th September, 2006 at Rongrenggiri Government Higher Secondary School. Mr. F. Kharlyngdoh, Deputy Commissioner, East Garo Hills District, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The programme was also a part of Community Mobilisation for enrolment of all the drop-out school children to bring them back to school. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kharlyngdoh said that education has become an important part of our day to day life and he urged everyone to try to convince others about the importance of literacy and to cooperatively combat illiteracy. He also formally enrolled five drop out children on the occasion. Mr. V.J. Abraham, Deputy Inspector of Schools presented and read out a report of Community Mobilisation programme undertaken at the Block and Village level. The function was presided over by Mr.K.Sen, District Mission Co-ordinator. |
Press Release No. 680/06 WORLD LITERACY DAY OBSERVED AT NONGPOH The District Unit Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), State Mission Authority of Meghalaya, (SMAM), Ri Bhoi District, Nongpoh observed the World Literacy Day which is also part of the District Level Community Mobilization on Enrolment Drive at NSCA Stadium, Pahamsyiem, Nongpoh on September 8, 2006. Chairman, Meghalaya Economic Development Council (MEDC), Dr. D D Lapang grace the occasion as the Chief Guest. Speaking at the function, Dr. Lapang informed that in the year 2005-2006 one lakh students have dropped out of school and he expresses concern that the figure includes the students of the State also. He urges upon everyone to try to convince others about the importance of literacy and to cooperatively combat illiteracy. The Central and the State Government has taken the initiatives in providing basic education to children between 6-14 years of age, added Dr. Lapang. Altogether 12 drop out students was enrolled on the day through the Mawdiangum Cluster Resource Centre (CRC) and Nerbong CRC. Others who spoke on the occasion were Mr. B Dhar, Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, Mr. C B Syiem, EM, KHADC, Mr. J Syiem, Sirdar, Nongpoh Elaka. The function was presided over by Mr. M H Thabah, Inspector of School, Ri Bhoi District while the vote of thanks was offered by Mr. V Syiem, CRC Coordinator, Mawdiangum. Earlier, a rally was also flagged off by the Deputy Commissioner from DTO Office, Nongpoh where students from different schools of the District took part. The rally culminated at NSCA Stadium, Pahamsyiem, Nongpoh. The highlights of the day included songs, dances and skit performed by the students of the District depicting the theme of World Literacy Day. |
