GOVERNOR INAUGURATES SEMINAR ON SOCIAL EVILS AT POMLUM

Shillong, September 10, 2011: Meghalaya Governor Mr. R. S. Mooshahary formally inaugurated A One Day Seminar on Social Evils and trees planting organized by the Meghalaya Pensioners Association and sponsored by the District Planning, East Khasi Hills at Pomlum Higher Secondary School, Pomlum on September 10, 2011.

The Seminar was also attended by the local MLA Mr. R.V. Lyngdoh as the guest of honour, Mr Latho Manik Syiem, Syiem of Hima Mylliem, Prof. Dr. Animesh Mishra, DM, Head of Department Cardiology, NEIGRIHMS, members of Meghalaya Pensioners Association, Rangbah Shnong, villagers, teachers and students of Pomlum area.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Mooshahary congratulated the initiative taken by the Meghalaya Pensioners Association for the active role undertaking by the association to create awareness on the hazards of drugs, HIV/AIDS, Alcoholism and other social evils.

Mr. Mooshahary who is also a patron member of the Meghalaya Pensioners Association said that the main motive of the seminar is to bring into the light the various social issues which directly or indirectly affect a person or many members of a society. He further highlighted the steps required to tackle the social problems like early marriages, violence against women, food habits, HIV/ AIDs and alcoholism which affected the growth and process of the society at large.

During the day long programme, extensive lectures by Resource Persons on different issues which include Social Responsibilities and Ethics of Medical Profession, HIV/ AID, Alcoholism and Consumer Rights followed by an interactive session where participants put forward their questions and seeking clarifications from the Resource Persons.

The Resource Persons on the day were drawn from NEIGRIHMS, Meghalaya AIDs Control Society, KRIPPA Foundation, departments of Food Civil Supplies and Consumers Affairs and Controller of Weights and Measures.

Other who spoke on the occasion includes Mr. F. B. Lyngdoh, President, MFA, Mr. B. E.Wahlang, General Secretary, MFA, Mrs. B. S. Nongkhlaw, Headmaster Pomlum Higher Secondary School. Later the chief guest and other dignitaries took part in a tree plantation in the school premises.
